They look at it and quote
They come out to see your yard and give you a price and a start date. You decide whether to go ahead. The work and warranty are between you and them.
Signs it's time to build or replace
Some backyards just need more. Others have a deck or fence that's quietly becoming unsafe. Here's what to look for.
A door to nowhere
A patio door high off the ground with no deck, or a temporary set of steps, is a fall waiting to happen.
Soft boards or a bouncy deck
Rot in the boards or joists, or a frame that was undersized. Worth checking before someone goes through.
Wobbly railings or stairs
Loose posts and steps are the most common deck injuries. They're usually fixable if caught early.
A leaning fence
Posts rotting at the ground or heaved by frost. Once a few go, the rest usually follow.
No room in the garage
Mower, snowblower, bikes and patio furniture all fighting for space. A shed gives the car its spot back.
Too hot to sit outside
A deck in full afternoon sun goes unused. A pergola or covered area makes it a room you'll actually use.
Most Oxford County deck and fence contractors fill their spring and summer schedules by early spring. Getting a quote in the off-season means a better choice of start dates, and time to sort out any permits.
What affects the price
Every yard is different, so a contractor needs to see yours. These are the main things that change a quote:
- The size and height of the deck
- Pressure-treated, cedar or composite
- Railings, stairs and levels
- The length and height of fence, and the number of gates
- Shed size, base and finishes
- Slopes, wet ground and access for equipment

Questions
Are you the contractor?
No. We're a referral service. We pass your request to an independent local contractor, who does the visit, quote and work.
Do I pay you anything?
No. The service is free for homeowners. You only pay for the work if you decide to go ahead.
Do you only do decks?
No. Despite the name, we connect you with contractors for fences, sheds, pergolas and gazebos too, and they can quote on more than one at once.
Is there a deck builder near me?
If you're in Woodstock, Ingersoll, Tillsonburg or anywhere else in Oxford County, yes. See the full list of areas.
How much does a deck cost?
It depends on the size, height, materials and railings. A contractor needs to see your yard to give you a real number. Our cost guide explains what changes the price.
Do I need a permit?
Usually for decks more than about 24 inches off the ground and for sheds over 15 square metres. Usually not for fences, except around pools. See our permit guide.
When should I book?
As early as possible. Spring and early summer fill up fast. Getting quotes in winter or early spring gives you the best choice of start dates.
Can you repair my deck or fence instead of replacing it?
Often, yes. If the frame or posts are sound, new decking, railings or fence boards can be all it needs. The contractor will tell you honestly if it's past repair.
Who stands behind the work?
The company that does the work. Any warranty is between you and them, so ask about it before you agree to the job.
