What you can build

  • Storage sheds for the mower, snowblower, tools and garden gear
  • Garden sheds with windows, shelving and a potting bench
  • Workshops and hobby sheds with a wider door, more headroom and power run out from the house
  • Lean-to sheds against a fence or the side of a garage, where space is tight
  • Larger outbuildings on rural properties, for equipment, firewood or a small barn

Custom-built or a kit?

A shed built on site can be any size and match your house, with proper framing, roofing and siding that lasts decades. A prefab kit or a pre-built shed delivered on a truck is quicker and often cheaper, but you're limited to stock sizes and lighter materials. Some contractors will also assemble a kit you've bought and build the base for it.

The base matters most

Most shed problems start underneath. A shed needs a level base that drains: a compacted gravel pad, treated skids on gravel, concrete piers or a poured slab. Sitting a shed straight on the grass means sticking doors and a rotting floor within a few years.

Permits and placement

In Ontario, a shed of 15 square metres (about 160 square feet) or less usually doesn't need a building permit, as long as it has no plumbing. It still has to meet your municipality's zoning rules for height and distance from the property line, so check before you pick the spot. See our permit guide.

Questions

What size shed do I need?

Bigger than you think. Lay out what you want to store on the driveway first, then add room to walk in and grab things. Many people find a 10 x 12 shed fills up quickly, so it's worth checking how large you can go without a permit.

Can my shed have power?

Yes. Power is run from the house, usually underground, by a licensed electrical contractor with an ESA permit.

How long does it take to build a shed?

A typical backyard shed takes a few days, including the base. Larger or more detailed sheds take longer.

Can it match my house?

Yes. A custom shed can use the same siding, roofing and trim colours as your house, which makes it look like it belongs.
